Stewart Bellman,
Professor and Faculty Development Coordinator, Black Hills
State University, and faculty development consultant to the South Dakota
School of Mines and Technology, was deeply engaged in improving college
teaching and learning and in inspiring and facilitating the engagement of
others. In addition to leading the faculty development program at Black
Hills State University, he reached out to form a partnership with the
South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and a network both within
South Dakota and among The Collaboration’s broader membership. He served
on The Collaboration’s Steering Committee (the precursor to the Board of
Directors) from 1990-96, including terms as vice chair and chair. Before
this, he also served on two of The Collaboration’s conference planning
committees (November 1992, February 1994) and chaired two others (February
1992, February 1993), in addition to serving on other Collaboration
program committees. He attended the annual Symposium of the HBCU Faculty
Development Network when it was first launched by a group of Collaboration
participants and returned to present a session with one of his
undergraduate students. A deeply dedicated but very modest teacher and
learner, Stewart was an inspiration to those who worked with him. This
award program hopes to inspire and recognize other stories like Stewart’s,
and we appreciate this opportunity to honor him through the naming of this
award.
